Omelette du Fromage
I’ll always think of Steve Martin when I make this lunchtime staple.
When I was a senior in high school I trekked to the Nassau Coliseum on Long Island to see Steve Martin on his “A Wild and Crazy Guy” tour. He did not disappoint, but then again, there wasn’t much chance that he would. I had both of his albums memorized, and annoyed everyone I knew performing his material, including ‘Excuse Me ’, ‘Grandmother’s Song’, ‘Mad At My Mother’, ‘You People Are Paranoid”, ‘The Non-Conformist’s Oath’, and ‘French’:
Chapeau means hat. Ouef means egg. It’s like those French have a different word for everything…
So the only thing I could remember was cheese omelette. ‘Omelette du fromage.’ I’m practicing all the time. Omlette du fromage. I’m meeting people, “Hey, omlette du fromage.” Finally, I go into a restaurant and go, “Omelette du fromage.” And the problem if you order in French the waiter thinks you speak French, he goes, “Zoon de swee le do de da swa” And you go, “Yes.” He brings…
